The Imperial Hotel has taken its environmental commitment a step further by gaining the Green Key environmental accreditation, promoting sustainable tourism internationally.

Describing how The Imperial started on their ‘green journey’ nearly 20 years ago, General Manager, Geoff Lofthouse, commented:

“I am delighted The Imperial Hotel has achieved this international environmental award from Green Key in recognition of our green credentials, and in particular to be the first large hotel in North Wales to have gained this acclaimed status.  We’ve been working on our green action plan since before the millennium and this continues to ensure the hotel’s sustainable approach is first class.”

Green Key is an international FEE (Federation of Environmental Education) programme run in Wales by the environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, who also run the prestigious Blue Flag Beach awards and Eco-schools programme. Following a very successful pilot scheme last year, the Green Key scheme is now being offered right across Wales. The programme allows Welsh businesses to celebrate the positive environmental changes they are implementing and market themselves to an audience that is increasingly aware of their environmental responsibilities.

Geoff first became aware of the award at a business event in February hosted by Keep Wales Tidy in partnership with North Wales Tourism. On hearing of the award Jim Jones, MD of North Wales Tourism commented:

“We are delighted that another North Wales Tourism member has been awarded coveted Green Key status by Keep Wales Tidy.  The Imperial is one of our most prestigious hotels in the beautiful resort of Llandudno, and it’s great to hear they are striving to be as eco-friendly as possible. Congratulations to Geoff, Lyn and team.”

Green Key accreditation guides providers through the process of making their businesses more sustainable, ultimately making commercial as well as environmental savings. Areas of focus for the accreditation include energy, water, waste, green activities and guest engagement.

Lesley Jones, CEO of Keep Wales Tidy said:

It is great to see a four-star establishment such as The Imperial achieving Green Key accreditation. This award is specifically for the tourism industry and as such is about being environmentally minded without compromising the guest experience. The Imperial shows that a luxury hotel can still consider the environment in all aspects of its business. Green Key recognises, supports and applauds businesses who do that.”
