What’s Great About Autumn in North Wales?

We love the changing seasons here in North Wales, you can see them reflected in the trees, mountains and along the coastline, but there is something very special about autumn; when the warmth of the summer still lingers, the perfect temperature to explore and wander, whilst the evenings cool, encouraging us to seek cosiness, in sumptuous hotel bedrooms, hot chocolates and restorative dinners.
What do we think you’ll fall for this autumn, here on our beautiful North Wales coast?

Autumn’s Colours

You can’t beat the scenery in North Wales as we step into autumn, the colours are transforming from coast to country. The mountains, swapping their green slopes and heathered flanks for crimson and copper. The forests, turning a fiery red and gold, their hidden waterfalls looking spectacular after the seasonal rains. And the skies, dramatic, wind swept and brooding.

Cosy Comfort & Welsh food

Hot chocolates, warming soups and open fires… Autumn is the perfect time for crisp morning beach walks and afternoon teas, mountain hikes and delicious dinners and shopping trips and late lunches.

When you visit our Llandudno hotel you can sit down at The Terrace for a relaxed bite or a light dinner with great views across Llandudno’s sweeping bay, an indulgent towering afternoon tea or to make it extra special, book a table at Chantrey’s Restaurant – our elegant two AA Rosette restaurant for an unforgettable dining experience. Our kitchen celebrates local, seasonal ingredients like Welsh lamb and beef, Edwards of Conwy sausages, Anglesey salt, and Welsh cheeses, sourced from local suppliers wherever possible.

Walk or Ramble

The paths and trails are quieter now, the beaches, empty but a few other keen ramblers, seeking the crisp autumn air and the glorious crash of the waves. The mountains have said goodbye to the crowds but for those still keen to venture, book a guided walk and endeavour to bag some peaks, you’ll be rewarded by far-reaching views and autumn’s fading warm sun.

But you needn’t seek summits to enjoy a walk or ramble during the autumn, autumn’s centrepiece lies in the lowlands; the golden carpet and raining leaves.
Let the kids don their wellies and splash through puddles and play in the leaves. Or perhaps it’s a rejuvenating coastal walk and time on the beach you’re seeking during your North Wales break, in which case, our Llandudno hotel is perfectly placed. Step out and turn left or right for seaside strolls and autumn memories.

Sights and Shows

For lovers of drama, comedy, live music, Opera or National Theatre, find something you’ll love at Venue Cymru this autumn. From Steve Steinman’s Anything for Love – The Meat Loaf Story showing on 4th October and Welsh National Opera’s A Night at the Opera on the 9th October, to An Evening with Nigel Owens MBE on 18th October or comedian Josh Widdicombe’s stand-up show, Not My Cup of Tea on 3rd November. There’s truly something for everyone in Venue Cymru’s autumn line-up, so peruse the listings, book your tickets and then book a break at our Llandudno hotel and make it a getaway to remember.

Venture to Newborough Forest, a 55-minute coastal drive from our North Wales hotel, where you can enjoy a peaceful beach and forest walk, looking out for these important mammals. The best place to see them is in the ‘volunteer-maintained Llyn Parc Mawr community woodland, which has dedicated red squirrel feeders and seating areas for you to sit and wait for them to appear.’

Portmeirion – at just over an hour from our Llandudno hotel, this beautiful village on the outskirts of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, was built by Welsh architect Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1973, and is certainly worth a visit. It’s a scenic drive away for anyone looking for a day trip during their North Wales autumn getaway.
