Discover North Wales on Foot – Beach Walks

North Wales has an abundance of beautiful beaches – mile upon mile of golden sand against a backdrop of outstanding views – so we’ve picked six of our favourite beaches which are great for walking:

The seaside resort of Llandudno boasts two beaches and West Shore, which is on the Wales Coast Path is a quiet sandy beach which at low tide reveals a large expanse of sand with views overlooking Conwy Sands.

Colwyn Bay beach is another generous stretch of fine golden sand and the promenade has been refreshed and revitalised and now boasts a waterside development with watersports centre.  Colwyn Bay to the seaside village of Rhos on Sea is a lovely walk with the new beach which is usable at all tides, café and kiosks along the way.  There’s also the 6th Century St Trillo Chapel, the smallest chapel in Britain with seats for six people, which is right on the beach just past the point.

Llanddwyn Bay or Newborough Beach is a mile long stretch of beautiful sandy beach on Anglesey which is part of the National Nature Reserve of Newborough Warren.  This stunning beach has views of the Lleyn Peninsula and is a popular walking spot for people that want to get to Llanddwyn Island,  home of St Dwywen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers who founded a convent on the island and the remains of Dwynwen’s church can still be seen today.  Newborough Forest which backs on to the beach provides another coastal but sheltered walk which has many well laid paths

Red Wharf Bay on the east coast of Anglesey is a sandy beach stretching over 2.5 miles, but at low tide it joins up with Llanddona Beach to become 10 square miles so there literally is miles and miles of walking available.

Abersoch Beach on the Lleyn Peninsula is another very popular beach for walkers.  Its sheltered position means it is ideal all year round and offers walkers views of the mountains of west Wales and St Tudwal’s Islands.

Whistling Sands or Porthor is one of only two beaches in Europe which have unique shaped sand particles that create a “whistling” sound when you shuffle your feet.

Please do check out the tide times before venturing on to any beach.  These can be found online via a number of websites including the BBC here.

Tomorrow’s theme is our final article for National Walking Month and it covers a few of the amazing Lakeside walks to be enjoyed in North Wales.
